Overview

The Nurse Extern in the Nurse Extern Advancement Training (NEAT) 6 week program works under the supervision of an assigned licensed professional (RN or LPN) in the department or unit assigned in the personal care of patients and their environment (including those needing special precautions) and performs specified functions in tasks where there is validated competency including but not limited to : simple wound care (i.e, cleaning of abrasions/lacerations), EKGs, peripheral INT removal, and basic phlebotomy. Licensed personnel will provide education and validate the Nurse Tech has met required competency to perform skills prior to patient care.

The Nurse Extern must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served in the assigned unit as described according to departmental policy and procedures; treat patients and their families with respect and dignity; adhere to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards; and, demonstrate an understanding of psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families.

What You Will Do

  • Provides personal care of patients and their environment (to include those with special precautions. Performs specified functions and tasks based on validated competency by licensed nurse to include but not limited to: simple wound care, EKGs, peripheral INT Removal and basic phlebotomy.
  • Perform activities of daily living including hygiene, nutrition, and comfort activities under the direct supervision and guidance of the RN Preceptor. Maintains cleanliness and neatness of the patients' and unit's environment. Performs approved treatments and procedures accurately and safely.
  • Observes, gathers, and reports pertinent patient information including intake and output, daily weights, vital signs, pulse oximetry, and blood glucose.
  • Maintains a safe environment by following hospital and unit policies and procedures.

Qualifications

Education

  • Professional Nursing School (in progress), with 2.5 GPA or higher (Required) and
  • High School Diploma or GED, (Required)

Experience

  • Nursing Fundamentals course completed from an accredited Professional Nursing School (Required)
  • 40 hours of direct patient care clinical completed (Required)

Skills And Abilities

  • Ability to commit to 6-week program, 4 days week (Monday-Thursday), 6 hours per day

N.E.A.T Hours Requirements:

  • Orientation – Friday, June 5th (Remote)
  • Extern program - June 8th through July 23rd (excludes July 4th week)
  • 6 Week Program, 4 days per week (Monday – Thursday)
  • 6 hours per day (hours may vary based on assignment)
  • Hours will be day shift

Licenses and Certifications

  • CPR/BLS Certification - American Heart Association/American Red Cross/American Safety and Health Institute (AHA/ARC) Upon Hire(Required)
  • Certified Nurse Aid (CNA) - Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) Eligible to apply for State of Virginia licensure (Required)
